Buying Guide for Cigar Holsters and Tubes

Cigar cases and cigar tubes are obviously designed to transport cigars during travel. They are made of leather, wood, metal, carbon, or a combination of these materials and are suitable for storing small quantities of cigars. When choosing the right option, you should consider the following guidelines:

CIGAR MOUTHPIECE SET CIGAR HOLDER

1. How effective is the damage prevention of cigars?
2. How resistant are cigars to drying out?
3. Is it suitable for holding cigars of different sizes?
4. Quality and design
5. Comfort, handling and usability

Regardless of the material, a cigar holster consists of two cylinders that can be joined together, or two or three cylinders, depending on whether you want to hold one, two, or three cigars. They provide excellent protection against damage while preventing moisture loss from the cigar. Of course, you can put small cigars in a hard large cigar tube, but in this case you have to be very careful not to let the tube fall to the ground, because there is a risk of hitting your head and feet on the end of the large cigar tube , which can sometimes cause cigar tubes to burst. For this reason, cigar tubes of various lengths are available on the market. For single cigars, an adjustable cigar tube is also available, which can be adjusted to the exact length of the cigar.

Metal tube

In addition to cheap (but practical) tubes made of tinned iron, other precious metal tubes cost several hundred euros, and although these may appear to be of higher quality, they are not and are not suitable for their particular purpose. They are simple to operate: when inserting the cigar, you must be careful not to let the wrapper hit the relatively sharp edge of the tube.

If your cigar has been packed intact into the cigar tube, taking it out can be a real irritant, especially if your cigar tube is too long and your cigar is short and fat. If you insert the cigar too far, it will shake and make a popping sound. At a recent Habanos Cigar Festival, a long-time user of cigar pipes recounted an experience he had: One time he was sitting on the beach trying to take out a thick cigar from a thin cigar pipe. , but it is very difficult, the only solution is to put the cigar tube in a sunny place, let the cigar dry a little, so that the diameter of the cigar will become smaller, and then shake it out.

Wooden pipe

Wood pipes are not popular, but they are attractive. They are usually made of poplar, but pipes made of oak, redwood, and other woods are also available from manufacturers. Since wood absorbs moisture and the inside of a wooden tube is not sealed, it should always be stored in a humidity chamber, otherwise the dry wood will quickly suck moisture out of the cigar wrapper and the cigar will lose its elasticity. Therefore, wooden pipes should always be kept in a moist environment and never allowed to be placed in a dry place. But the edges of wooden tubes are not as sharp as those of metal tubes, so there is no risk of damage when the cigar is inserted into the tube.

Leather case

High-quality, well-made leather cases have virtually no odor. If the cigar is only stored in the leather case for a short time, it is not worth mentioning, but after 1-2 days of storage, the tobacco smell of the cigar will disappear and be replaced by the smell of leather.

When you're shopping for a leather case, make sure the leather smell is as minimal as possible, and if you're buying online, ask the dealer to verify it. Price is no guarantee here, there are plenty of beautifully crafted, expensive leather cases that also reek of tannery smells, but there are other lesser-known products that are almost odorless. Your nose or a reliable manufacturer is your only guarantee.

Leather cases also absorb large amounts of moisture, which can also cause cigars to dry out quickly. However, wooden tubes should be stored in a humidor, which is definitely not the case with leather cases. Too much humidity in your humidor can cause it to smell musty. Some leather cases are lined with Spanish cedar, which really reduces the smell of leather.

Carbon tube

The carbon tubes perfectly protect the cigars from damage and drying out, come in various lengths, are visually attractive and are so thin and light, with a wall thickness of only 1.5 mm, that you can even put them in your shirt pocket without any problem .

The only downside is that there are currently a very limited number of options available. The reason is that manufacturing is expensive and complex, as it requires a suitable stamping mold, and the pressing and drying of the polyester-carbon composite must take place in an autoclave, a type of pressure furnace. Therefore, they must be produced in large quantities to prevent prices from becoming astronomical.

Pipe with humidification system

Nowadays you can also find leather cases with built-in humidification systems or moisturizing sheets. Habanos S.A. has launched a single-tube cigar with various trademarks, and its construction is very clever. This tube was made into a double-walled cylinder, that is, a second tube was built around the actual tube, with a gap of approximately 1.5 mm between the two tubes. The end of the tube is a screw cap. Behind the screw cap is a long humidifying sponge. There are small holes on the side of the inner tube, and there are also small holes in the inner tube of the cigar.

Therefore, moisture can reach the entire cigar through the space between the two tubes, thus avoiding uneven humidity. While so-called moisturizer (a mixture of demineralized water and propylene glycol) is not recommended, the sponge in this tube is supposed to be moisturizing with this. If you use demineralized water alone, this will result in an overly moist cigar. Whether a humidification system is actually necessary in a sealed cigar tube for a single cigar is another matter. Of course, this isn't necessary, but their approach to solving the humidification problem in such a limited space is certainly successful.
